For 2019’s LGBTQ History Month we ran a small, student only, event along with Anna McNally from the University of Westminster Archives, exploring Westminster’s own queer history.
In this event, we considered the challenges that face the queer historian in finding and recovering the histories of queer subjects from an archive. In particular, we explored the traces of queer lives and communities that intersect with our own institution. So we looked back through old issues of student newspaper, the McGarel, to investigate the history of the ‘gay soc’ and to see how students responded to the queer political issues of the 1980s. We also looked back at Westminster’s sporting history and traced the erotic networks that our buildings and spaces has fostered.
